Do You Understand the Meaning of Horsepower?

The term horsepower has been associated with engine power ratings for hundreds of years now. But how many of us really understand what exactly it means or how the term was first coined?

Horsepower is a term that was first thought up by a man named James Watt in the late 18th century. In order to better sell steam engines, he came up with this concept by comparing it to horses in order to make the engine power translate to a familiar idea that his customers would understand. While watching mill horses, he deduced that one horse could pull 22,000-foot pounds for one minute. He then rounded this up to 33,000-foot-pounds and called that one horsepower. We have been using the term ever since.
